Step 1: Identify your category
FSSAI has three broad levels — Basic registration for the smallest businesses, a State licence for mid-sized operations, and a Central licence for large operations, importers and certain manufacturers. Step 2: Prepare your documents
Typical documents include:
- Identity and address proof of the proprietor or partners
- Passport-size photograph
- Business address proof
- Food product or category list
- Layout plan for manufacturing units
- Water test report where applicable
Step 3: Apply on the portal
You fill the application on the FoSCoS portal, select the correct licence type, upload your documents, and pay the applicable fee. The fee and validity depend on the category and the number of years you choose.
Step 4: Inspection and issuance
Depending on the category, there may be an inspection of your premises. Once everything is in order, your FSSAI registration or licence is issued, and the FSSAI number must then appear on your products and premises as required.
Don't forget renewals
An FSSAI licence is issued for one to five years and must be renewed before expiry. Letting it lapse can disrupt your operations and platform listings, so tracking the renewal date is important.
