Two regimes, one choice

India lets individual taxpayers choose between two income tax systems — the new tax regime and the old tax regime. The new regime is now the default, offering lower slab rates but fewer deductions, while the old regime keeps popular deductions like Section 80C and HRA. Choosing the right one can save you a meaningful amount.

The new (default) regime slabs

Under the new regime for the current tax year, the broad slab structure is:

  • Up to ₹4 lakh — nil
  • ₹4–8 lakh — 5%
  • ₹8–12 lakh — 10%
  • ₹12–16 lakh — 15%
  • ₹16–20 lakh — 20%
  • ₹20–24 lakh — 25%
  • Above ₹24 lakh — 30%

A standard deduction of ₹75,000 is available to salaried taxpayers, and a Section 87A rebate means income up to about ₹12 lakh can effectively be tax-free (around ₹12.75 lakh for salaried individuals after the standard deduction). A 4% cess applies on the tax.

The old regime in brief

The old regime has a basic exemption of ₹2.5 lakh for those under 60 and allows deductions such as Section 80C (up to ₹1.5 lakh), HRA, home loan interest and others. If you have substantial deductions, the old regime can still work out cheaper.

Which regime should you choose

As a rule of thumb, if you claim large deductions — heavy 80C investments, HRA, home loan interest — the old regime may be better. If your deductions are limited and you prefer simplicity, the new regime usually wins. Salaried individuals can compare each year; those with business income have more restricted switching.

How to decide accurately

The only reliable way to choose is to calculate your tax under both regimes for your actual income and deductions. A small comparison before the year ends can save you real money and help you plan investments accordingly.
