A new income tax law
After more than six decades, India is replacing the Income Tax Act of 1961 with the new Income Tax Act 2025, effective from 1 April 2026. The goal is to modernise and simplify the law, which had become complex through decades of amendments. For most taxpayers, the core principles stay the same, but the structure and some processes are cleaner.
Simpler structure and language
The new Act reorganises provisions into a far more concise, readable structure with fewer, clearer chapters. The aim is to make the law easier to understand for ordinary taxpayers and businesses, reducing confusion and disputes over interpretation.
The 'tax year' concept
One notable change is the move toward a clearer 'tax year' approach, simplifying the earlier interplay of 'previous year' and 'assessment year'. This makes it easier to understand which period your income and filing relate to.
What stays the same
Importantly, the new law did not change the income tax slab rates or the existence of both the new and old regimes for the relevant year. The new regime remains the default, with the option to choose the old regime where beneficial. Cess and key reliefs broadly continue.
Process and compliance updates
Alongside the new Act, expect new ITR forms and streamlined filing and TDS/TCS processes designed to ease compliance. Some procedural reliefs were also introduced. As always, the practical details get clearer as forms and rules are notified.
